Senior Mechanical Design Engineer - Thurso, Highlands - Scotland

 

Job description
 
Design and development of mechanical and electro-mechanical components and assemblies for power electronics, battery and charger products. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to all phases of the product lifecycle from initial concept through design, development, verification and through-life support.
 
 
Main duties
 

- Product Design using 3D SolidWorks

- Creating Assembly and component drawings

- Mechanical and Electronic Assembly design

- Design of Enclosures, cabinets and consoles

- Design for maintainability

- Design for manufacture

- Thermal Design and Simulation using SolidWorks

- Shock and Vibration Design and Simulation using SolidWorks

- Thermal Management of Electronics enclosures, heat exchangers, (air to air, air to water etc)

- PCB Thermal Management analysis

- Ensure compliance to the relevant Customer, Legislative and Environmental specifications

- Technical support to Manufacturing and Process Engineering groups

- Liaison with the customers (internal/external) throughout the design

- Management of prototypes and pre-production builds

- Liaise with suppliers and Supply Chain Management to get the best solution in the required timescales

- Ensure compliance to Company Procedures

- Development and completion of suitable Qualification and Testing programmes

- Transfer Design to Production ensuring that the product is manufacturable after considering and proposing appropriate cost reduction 

 

Technical & Professional skills:
 

- Expert knowledge of relevant Design Techniques and tools appropriate to skills area.

- Basic understanding of Electrical / Electronic Engineering principles and System integration

- Project plan interpretation and time management skills to meet programme and personal objectives / milestones

- Professional experience of the full lifecycle of mechanical product development

- Honours degree in a relevant subject (Masters preferred)

- Proven ability to work in small multi-functional project team (including electronics, software and qualification engineers)

 
Desirable skills and experience
 

- Mechanical and Electronic Assembly design

- Experience in the design of batteries, chargers or power supplies

- 3D CAD modelling

- Thermal, Shock and Vibration Design and Simulation using SolidWorks

- Thermal Management of Electronics enclosures, heat exchangers, (air to air, air to water etc)

- DfX (manufacturability, test, cost etc)

- Design for EMC

- Experience of designing various components including plastics, sheet metal, injections moulding and die castings

- Management of prototypes and pre-production builds

- Design documentation

- Reliability Engineering (FMEA and MTBF analysis etc)

 

 

Excellent written, verbal communication and organisation skills are a pre-requisite.
