The University of the Highlands and Islands and Dench Power Ltd. are offering a rare opportunity to lead a major project hosted within an industry leading company, on a collaborative Knowledge Transfer Partnership. KTP supports partnerships between business and universities or research organisations, placing graduates (KTP Associates) to work on innovative high profile projects
Main duties

The Associate will be a University employee but will be supported and supervised by staff from both the Company and the University. The Associate will be based at the Company, which is located in Thurso, Caithness.


Whilst developing your own engineering and management knowledge and skills.  Your role will be to undertake research and development of the welding processes used in the company’s products, with the aim of enhancing the processes, reducing failures and developing an in process test for reliability.


You will receive supervision and support from experienced engineering staff both within the university and company and there will be an opportunity to register for a higher degree There is a £4,000 tax-free personal  development and travel budget available and training will be provided, including attendance at KTP residential modules.


You will develop technical and analytical skills and knowledge such as advanced metallurgy, microstructural analysis, advanced manufacturing, generating technical specifications, product design and analysis, problem-solving, design methodology and knowledge based engineering.  During the course of 2 years, you will also develop management skills including effective communication, project planning and budgeting, resource and time management and team working.


Skills Required:

You must have a good honours degree, 2.1 or above, or a more advanced qualification, in the area of mechanical engineering/materials science/metallurgy.  You will have a good understanding, and interest in, the structure and properties of engineering materials and typical joining processes.  You will have experience of undertaking a literature review and how this is used to inform the direction of the investigation, experience of investigative experimental research, analysis and development and technical report writing and presentation skills.  Skills such as the preparation and analysis of microstructural samples would be beneficial.


You will be a good team worker, but also capable of working on your own initiative. Good communication skills, both written and verbal, and experience of using MS software including Excel and Project are a requirement.  You should have excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to manage your workload and meet deadlines.


Whilst employed by North Highland College for the duration of the partnership you will spend the majority of your time within Denchi Power, working directly with their engineering and management staff.  60% of KTP associates take up employment with the partner company and it is intended that the associate will be offered a position at the end of the two year partnership.
